Inspired by views to the 606 Trail from the existing house and the years of our studio working alongside it, this single-family residence situates living spaces on the upper level and bedrooms below, reorienting the house toward the trail.
The gable roof archetype echoes the original building form with modifications that increase usable space. Bedrooms and an entry gallery are located on lower levels as they demand less natural light and are buffered acoustically. Living, kitchen and dining areas are located on the second level providing views of the landscape along the 606 Trail and an abundance of natural daylight in the spaces where the owners spend the majority of their time. The addition of a loft breaks up the scale of the second level, provides structural bracing and acoustic dampening.

The exterior is clad in a fiber-cement panel and batten system. The batten patterning varies in density, articulating datums related to floor levels, material dimensions and the height of the trail. The subtly-textured black volume references a nearby home that the owners admire, a project we completed in 2010.
