The House for Two Artists is a renovation of a vintage brick cottage for an artist couple and their two children.
Organized around a library and stair, the design brings clarity to a previously circuitous assemblage of rooms. Two new skylights bathe the stair and gallery with light, linking distinct spaces for the kitchen, dining, and living while providing a sense of the entire volume. Adjacent to the dining space, the library is the heart of the home. The white oak pickets that provide a guard for the adjacent stair also provide the structure for the shelves. White oak panels clad the walls and ceiling setting an intimate scale. The design blends minimal detailing with a material warmth to achieve a rich and comfortable domestic space.
